Awarded Best Reply on Saving Model And Associated Relations With Push On Non Persisted Models

Alright, doing

Db::transaction(
    function () use ($creature) {
        $creature->save();
        foreach ($creature->limbs as $limb) {
            $limb->creature_id = $creature->id;
        }
        $creature->push();
    }
);

works in order to associate the limbs

But it won't work fully since the limbs have a recursive parent property so I need to insert them in order to reference the parent.

I ended up having two separate methods, one to make a model, the other one to create it

Started a new Conversation Saving Model And Associated Relations With Push On Non Persisted Models

Hello everyone !

I'm trying to make some custom factory for my project, the goal is to be able to have in memory objects with their relations and being able to save them on demand.

For context it's because sometimes in my app I'll need to generate some models with all their relations without actually persisting them.

Here is the code I currently use :

public static function makeCreature(array $data, int $userId = null, array $abilities = []): Creature
{
    /** @var Creature $creature */
    $creature = Creature::factory()->state(['name' => $data['name'], 'user_id' => $userId])->make();

    $creature->abilities->add(Ability::all());

    foreach ($data['limbs'] as $limb) {
        /** @var Limb $model */
        $model = Limb::firstWhere('name', '=', $limb['name']);
        $li = new LimbInstance();
        $li->model()->associate($model);
        $li->creature()->associate($creature);
        $li->health = $model->health;
        if (isset($limb['parent'])) {
            $parent = $creature->limbs->filter(
                function (LimbInstance $l) use ($limb) {
                    return $l->model->type === $limb['parent'];
                }
            )->sortBy(
                function (LimbInstance $li) {
                    return $li->children->count();
                },
                SORT_ASC
            )->first();
            $li->parent()->associate($parent);
        }
        $creature->limbs->add($li);
    }
    return $creature;
}

And it seems to generate an object with all I need inside. And then i got this other method that is supposed to persist the object and it's relations :

public static function createCreature(array $data, int $userId = null, array $abilities = []): Creature
{
    $creature = self::makeCreature($data, $userId, $abilities);
    $creature->save();
    $creature->push();

    return $creature;
}

But when I try to execute it, it gives me a Column 'creature_id' cannot be null (SQL: insert into limb_instances (limb_id, creature_id, health) values (1, ?, 40))

I understand that it's because the creature model s not saved at the time it tries to persist the relation. But I'd expect the push method to save the "parent" model first so it can propagate it's id through the relations.

Am I doing this wrongly ? Is there another way to achieve what I'm trying to do ?

EDIT: I was suggested to firstly save the creature before calling the push method, but this doesn't work either

Thanks :)
