Hi @ehsanquddusi ,

Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm also trying to use the Paginator outside of Laravel and having a view factory resolver issue.

Out of interest, I'm using blade standalone as well: https://github.com/EFTEC/BladeOne

If I could initialize the view factory I'm sure I could proceed.

eugenevdm left a reply on Storage::allFiles Gives Me Empty Array

How bizarre. I had exactly the same problem and google 'laravel storage files return nothing'. I simply changed Storage:: to Files:: and it worked. Doesn't really make sense to me.

$directory = public_path() . "/unpaid_files/";
$files = Storage::allFiles($directory);

doesn't work

$directory = public_path() . "/unpaid_files/";
$files = File::allFiles($directory);

works.

In both cases $directory resolves to:

"/home/user/Code/cubefinance-dev/public/unpaid_files/"

I guess I might be dealing with a relative issue?

I see the Laravel Testing documentation has a helper to test posting to JSON: https://laravel.com/docs/5.8/http-tests#testing-json-apis

I note numerous references on the Internet how to do this using Guzzlehttp. I would prefer to do it "natively" if it's possible. Please advise?

eugenevdm started a new conversation Laravel Lens Only Returning 25 Items And No Pagination Links Are Visible

I have created a lens as below. May I add that the big difference between this one and the one on the example page is that mine does not have a Group By clause.

The issue is that only 25 items are returned! At first I thought I was going blind but then I launched a new vanilla Laravel 5.8 project with Nova 2.0 and the issue is still there.

    {
        return $request->withOrdering($request->withFilters(
            $query->select('id', 'total', 'status')
        ));
    }

Laravel Nova Lens Documentation link https://nova.laravel.com/docs/1.0/lenses/defining-lenses.html

I then re-did the query with a group by clause and all of a sudden pagination links appeared. Can anyone please explain why this is so?

If have the following template to count the number of words typed into an input box but two issue remain:

  1. If you press space a couple of times and then start a new word, the spaces are counted.
  2. The counter starts off by saying one word is typed. Actually, when starting, no words are typed.

I suspect I have to move the inline calculation to a method instead, and also I have to add a data property. But then the question becomes how to I "realtime" see how many words are typed?

<template>
    <default-field :field="field" :errors="errors">
        <template slot="field">

            <p class="my-2 text-light">

eugenevdm left a reply on Setting 'checked' Property In Checkbox From Related Button

@topvillas thank you so much for you reply.

I'm sure your suggestion will work but I struggled for hours with the original problem and then eventually gave up. The reason being is that clicking the button seems to cause a focus event on the button, and then in spite of my Vue code the checkboxes only become clicked once it's blurred somewhere else, anywhere else, a checkbox, a slider, etc.

So now I'm just wrapping the checkboxes in labels, which is probably a lot more technically correct.

eugenevdm started a new conversation Setting 'checked' Property In Checkbox From Related Button

Please see the code below. In there, I use Laravel blade syntax to loop over an array of checkboxes. Next to each checkbox is a button. The idea is that when you click the button, the checkbox must become checked.

                            <input type="checkbox" id="{{ $color->id }}" value="{{ $color->name }}" v-model="checkedColors" v-bind:id="checkedColors">
                            <input type="button"
                                   style="background-color:{{ $color->code }};color:{{ $color->font or 'white' }}"
                                   value="{{ $color->name }}" title=""
                                v-on:click="checkedColors.checked = true"
                            >
                        @endforeach
</div>

At present nothing happens. I've tried various combinations but I still can't get it right. I guess I am missing something fundamental. Please assist.

Really weird behavior.

I get the same! It's not that evident on my desktop, but on my tablet where a responsive menu kicks in I can clearly see it.

PJAX is amazing though! It's really makes my app so so fast. I simply wrap

                @yield('content')
            </div>```

Some challenges remain with regards to Javascripts loading in the right place but I don't think they are insurmountable.

I would really like to get to the bottom of the double requests though before I release my app into production...

eugenevdm left a reply on Seeder That Needs To Post JSON

@Breki thank you so much for your reply.

I'm not merely asking how to post JSON to a route.

I'm asking how to seed my application using JSON data.

Behind the scenes the JSON route doesn't just insert data, it creates additional records, notifications, etc. So I really need to trigger the entire route, at the point of seeding my application.

I can't find the "application" in the seeder classes, and the factories do not seem to interact with the application. But in my test classes the test interact with the application.

I can manually created all the records and notifications and everything else, but seems like a lot of duplication.

I guess plan B would be to write seeders with PHP post classes and then figure out some way to work with authentication. Alternatively I might have to extend the test classes and manipulate them to seed data permanently.

eugenevdm started a new conversation Seeder That Needs To Post JSON

Hi,

I have various test cases that posts JSON data. For example, I have this: $data = [ 'plan_id' => $plan->id, 'user_id' => $user->id, 'name' => 'testing.co.za', ]; $response = $this->json('POST', '/domains', $data); $response ->assertStatus(200) ->assertJson([ 'created' => true, ]);

However, now I need to seed my database with JSON data.

I can just create a record, using DB::table('users')->insert([]) , but I need the "complexity" of using JSON as my controller does additional work when I post a form.

I am asking how to do standalone JSON posting in a Seeders.

eugenevdm started a new conversation Permissions Table Referred To In AuthServiceProvider Fails To Migrate During PHPUnit Test

When I run vendor/bin/phpunit against a simple test I get:

There was 1 error:

1) Tests\Feature\CommissionsTest::when_adding_a_subscription_also_assign_commission
Illuminate\Database\QueryException: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1 no such table: permissions (SQL: select * from "permissions")

I'm using an in-memory SQLite database.

In AuthServiceProvider.php when I comment all code related to the permissions framework the tests run. The code is:

public function boot()
    {
//        $this->registerPolicies();
//
// // Dynamically register permissions with Laravel's Gate.
//        foreach ($this->getPermissions() as $permission) {
//            Gate::define($permission->name, function ($user) use ($permission) {
//                return $user->hasPermission($permission);
//            });
//        }
    }

I took a chance and added 'use WithoutMiddleware` but this didn't chance anything.

Where am I going wrong? It seems although I have use DatabaseMigrations the databases are not migrated by the time it hits the AuthServiceProvider.

eugenevdm left a reply on ToMail Notifiable Ignores Recipient If Created Ad-hoc

This is how I solved this problem, not happy about the extra complexity but nevertheless it works.

Apparently Notification fails silently if a model is sent that has not been persisted. So now I have created an extra table to updateOrCreate every time an email address does not exist.

private function getRecipient($message)
    {
        $recipient = $message->ticket->customer;
        if (!$recipient) {
            $recipient = EmailAddress::updateOrCreate(
                ['email' => $message->ticket->from_email],
                ['source' => 'Email from helpdesk to unknown contact']);
        }
        return $recipient;
    }

eugenevdm started a new conversation ToMail Notifiable Ignores Recipient If Created Ad-hoc

I have a notification which sends fine when the model data is persisted, but not when I create a temporary object. The routine is:

public function emailMessage($message) { $recipients = $message->ticket->customer; if (!$recipients) { $temp = new User; $temp->email=$message->ticket->from_email; $recipients = $temp; } Notification::send($recipients, new TicketReply($message)); }

When $message->ticket->customer is actual data in the table, it works.

But when I create a temporary object via new it fails.

Notification doesn't even get called. Here is toMail in the Notification (which is never called):

public function toMail($notifiable) { $url = url('/tickets/'.$this->message->ticket->id); $subject = "[Ticket #" . $this->message->ticket->id . "] " . $this->message->ticket->subject; return (new MailMessage) ->from($this->message->ticket->department->email, $this->message->ticket->department->name) ->subject($subject) ->line($this->message->content) ->line('') ->action('View Ticket', $url) ->line('Thank you for your correspondence!'); }

I have to select an existing model, e.g. User, or another model.

By what if I simply want to email someone random, e.g. [email protected]? The Notification seems to fail because it can't see my recipients.

Am I missing something really obvious? Maybe create a new empty User model with 'routeNotificationForMail' property? I tried creating an empty model with just email set, but I didn't save it as I just want an once-off email and the empty model didn't pick up the email property.

eugenevdm left a reply on Building Large Project - Have To Choose Between Users Auth Model And Clients Auth Model Or Combined

Thanks @martinbean and @Jaytee I am seeing your point, especially

additionally complexity such as different models (and then authentication strategies) for different roles a user can have

Single auth strategy based on Users it is :-)

eugenevdm left a reply on Building Large Project - Have To Choose Between Users Auth Model And Clients Auth Model Or Combined

But here's the thing, see customers belong to companies. Companies might have many of their users logging in.

My perfect model accessors look like this:

$customer->products-> $customer->users-> or rather $customer->contacts->services->

etc.

So now if I have to do users, I have to do something like:

$user->customer->products->

Also now I'm worried if I want this perfect model fluent style of app either I have to alias 'User' to 'Customer' or 'Contact'. Perhaps whenever I create a new User also create a customer which is basically a duplicate of the User with a one-to-one relationship. Lots of sync issues. Or even more complex, use Morphy many to create a Users style subclass hierarchy.

I will take your advice for now, see how far I get. I guess in a few weeks I'll know what the best choice was.

eugenevdm started a new conversation Building Large Project - Have To Choose Between Users Auth Model And Clients Auth Model Or Combined

I'm building a fairly large scale application.

A large part of the application is customer facing. There will be a website where customers can order products.

Of course a massive part of the application is also the back office, e.g. where users admin the system, e.g work on the customer's orders.

I'm at the point now where I have to chose the auth model. I have two choices:

  1. Combine users and customers. Make an extra field in table users to indicate it's a customer.

  2. Split users and customers. Use the built-in users table, but also create a separate table for customers.

I see some immediate benefits with option 1. Firstly I will have a single auth model, and provided I can implement roles and permissions properly I can probably have fairly good workflow.

I see some other benefits with option 2. Programming wise it seems more legitimate, because I'm splitting the user (who admins the system) from the user (who uses the system). Splitting responsibilities "table-wise".

I can see some pitfalls with option 1. In the back of my mind I keep on having this idea that security will be severely compromised if somehow somewhere a customer elevates them self to a back office user. Also it's a bit mingled. Apart from the ability to log on, things might get confused between the "user" who is also a "customer". Security is not my main concern, but I am worried about having the same table for both.

Conversely I see some pitfalls with option 2. First of all I will have to have "dual" auth mechanisms taking out some of the built-in magic of Laravel. I'll probably code a lot slower with option 2...

A third way might be to totally split the back office website from the consumer website. Then I can do cross model integration but I'll have to use two connections and this will get messy.

Could someone please give me some pointers? My gut is leaning towards option 2 having two auth models but I'm not sure. Is it worthwhile implementing?

eugenevdm left a reply on Becoming An Expert Laravel Developer

  • Discipline yourself. Programming is part art, part constant discipline.
  • Make programming fun. Do fun stuff, e.g. try to make a game or something that you would want to use every day, e.g. a todo list app. Start with a simple project and keep on building from there.
  • Make sure you set goals. I was a medium programmer but I was dying to become better. I started doing Laracasts about a year ago but I am forcing myself to do every single lesson so that I can improve
  • Balance the rest of your life too. Although programming can be fun it can consume all your time so make sure you have other distractions to keep you sane.

Remember, this is a long term investment. Try and imagine where you want to be in six months, in a year, in two years, in five, etc.

Thank you, I will give that a bash and report back in a few days from now once I have refactored my app.

eugenevdm started a new conversation Database (model) Inheritence

Taking the following database example of services, and a subset of services, e.g. hosting services, I have the following dilemma:

I create a main table, called 'services', and a model Service.

This table contains settings that are common to all services and those are:

*id *description *monthly_price

I create another table called 'hosting_services' and a model HostingService.

The reason why I create another table is because I would like to add other types of services in the future as well, for example GardeningService.

In the HostingService, I have some specific fields, e.g.:

*domain *disk_space *disk_space_used

How can I gracefully handle this in Laravel?

My research indicates multiple solutions but nothing solid. I also note from research here https://laravel-news.com/2016-survey/ that some people in the community are requesting "Better model inheritance support".

  1. Stack Overflow post describing Polymorphic Relations (PR) versus Single Table Inheritance (STI) https://stackoverflow.com/questions/23973850/model-inheritance-in-laravel#

  2. Example extending abstract classes.

  3. Link to Dauce's extension to Eloquent, noting issues with this extension. https://github.com/ThibaudDauce/EloquentInheritanceStorage

I'm really completely lost here and just need some pointers if this is do-able or if I should do normal belongsTo and hasMany instead which makes data summarizing and editing a lot more difficult.

The idea I get is this whole concept of global variables and (dynamic) global configuration in Laravel is a bit of a minefield. Someone should take the effort to properly document all the different ways, or the Framework should be improved to accommodate something all of us want to do at some time.

I'd go with a config file. The idea behind a global variable is that it's gettable and settable from everywhere in the application, which is what the Config alias provides.

I tried that. The problem appears to be blade cache these variables so even though you can change them, they don't reflect on the blade.

I have the need to break after a foreach after the first loop. I tried:
@if (1==1) @break; @endif
but it didn't work. Instead I just see @break; repeatedly printed on the screen.

Thank you Bobby Bouwmann, your solution worked for me.

May I add that I especially registered on this forum to tell you:

  1. That your solution worked.
  2. That being derogatory towards someone is not very conducive to a healthy working environment. I can see that you are very clever and you have a high score, but there are reams and reams and reams of documentation and we don't always get the time to read everything.
