Why is this happening

So I started again in the hopes of committing everything to memory. I finally have my configuration set. I installed a fresh laravel 5.1 project. These where my steps: create a dummy route

Route::get('auth/login', function () {
    return view('welcome');

I copied and altered the generic route that comes with the routes.php file.

php artisan route:list
|        | GET|HEAD | /          |      | Closure |            |
|        | GET|HEAD | auth/login |      | Closure |            |

When I visit the welcome pages pops up fast. When I visit I get an error: Not Found-The requested URL /auth/login was not found on this server.

The apache access log lists: - - [20/Jun/2015:19:48:48 -0400] "GET /auth/login HTTP/1.1" 404 407 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu Chromium/43.0.2357.81 Chrome/43.0.2357.81 Safari/537.36"

I looked up the 407 error ans it means Proxy Authentication Required

My .htaccess is coppied directly from Laravel 5.1 docs.

What am I still missing? Is it because Laravel 5.1 is new or is it me? 5.0 worked out of the box for me.

BTW: I'm not complaining. I love Laravel and I will get to the bottom of this.

Any ideas?
