Caching performance with thousands of users?

I was wondering if you really gain anything by using caching when you have thousands of users.

Reason being is that with caching you now are storing a great deal number of files on the hard drive and have to read them every time you are checking the cache and how well is the cache maintained (garbage collection); compared to a mysql request.

On the surface, caching sounds great but it seems you are only trading the request from mysql to the filesystem and if you have thousands of users, that could equate to an enormous number of files on the hard drive.

Any input is greatly appreciated!
