Oh thanks :) I checked in the footer, but I didn't recognise it. I think it would worth it to have it in the top menu as well - newcomers would never find this.

balping started a new conversation Cummunity Link Menu Missing • 2 months ago

Hey @JeffreyWay ,

I really like the new design, I've been waiting for this since you showed a preview in one your css videos.

Only thing I miss is a menu item to community links.

https://laracasts.com/community

The above url is alive, but there's no menu item pointing to it - at least I haven't found it. I used to use it quite often to check new articles

@RonB1985 OK, maybe this issue may not effect everyone, but my main problem is not this, it was just a notice.

It would be probably even a better solution

It's quite annoying that this pops up each time I go back to a completed video just to view the comment section.

OK, maybe someone is viewing a video again, so he/she might want to continue from the middle even if it has been completed once. But then please check if the saved position is just before the end of the video. And if true, display no popup.

balping started a new conversation Acceptance Testing A Package? • 6 months ago

Hi!

I and my team are developing a package that works with a UI that uses JS heavily. This means that although we can write unit tests for some of the classes. But when it comes to acceptance testing, it becomes really difficult. It looks like we must 'mock' a whole app, with route registration, with some controllers and models and even views. And since JS is important we need Selenium, PhantomJS or something similar.

But I really don't know where to start. Maybe a separate laravel installation would be fine. Where this package would be included with composer. But there are some problems with this concept. First, the tests would be in two separate places. I couldn't run just phpunit once. Secondly, it would be difficult and/or ugly to include this testing install in the git repo.

Another option is creating folder under the tests folder where the the few important files (controllers, a route file, models) would be placed. Then with a special test case this mock app could be booted. But then comes the necessity of Selenium. I have no idea how it could work together with this setup.

So I'm asking for advice here. If someone has been in a similar situation before, I'd be happy to read his/her experiences. I didn't find any useful articles or blog posts on the net. They are either about how to acceptance test an app, or about hello-world level unit testing packages. Plus, I didn't find any good projects on github that could be used as an example. Packages that operate with a UI tend to have no tests at all.

Hi!

It looks like that a function that converts video length to mm:ss format is broken somewhere.

Example:

Imgur

The seconds part should't be greater than 59

I agree that $9 is not that much, I've already told this. (Btw it's equal to 6-7 beers where I live). And I'm not asking for huge discounts, it would be just a nice gesture. This classroom option is also a good idea, however I dont think my university is open to this...

It's just a html template, what kind of tutorial do you need? Their doc is pretty good actually... If you download it there's a starter file, full of comments explaining customisation possibilities, etc.

balping started a new conversation Student Discount? • 1 year ago

Hi!

I'm mainly addressing this to @JeffreyWay

I'm wondering if it would be possible to provide some student plan, here at laracasts. I'm currently a university student and I'm not saying that this $9 / month is that much but still not the cheapest thing out there (at least for me). I've been here for about 6 months so far, I really like Jeff's style and I dont want to cancel my subscription at all but I would really appreciate if there was some financial aid for students. Bigger companies often offer this, for example there's a significant discount on Wolfram's Mathematica, not to mention phpstorm which is free for students.

I dont want to beg here and I dont want to reduce your income, I just would like you to consider this.

Sorry if it was discussed here before

It can be done using vueify. However you should set process.env.NODE_ENV='production'; in your gulpfile.

Vueify was buggy and didn't really minify html, but it's now fixed thanks to a discussion on stackoverflow

Also check my pull request at vueify's github page.

balping started a new conversation Browserify + Vue + HTML Minify • 1 year ago

Hi!

I'm using elixir together with browserify. In my vue components I include templates from html files, like this:

Vue.extend({
    template: require('./call.html'),
    props: {
        call: {
            type: Object,
            required: true
        }
    },
       //...

It works as expected. However if I run gulp --production , html is not compressed in the generated file.

What I's like to achieve is to remove all unneeded tab, space, newline characters from the included html files.

There's a package called gulp-minify-html but I don't know how if I could use this one for solving this issue.

Has anyone here done something similar to this?

balping left a reply on Overriding Carbon Language Files • 1 year ago

Hi!

I had the same problem as you. After a little bit of code digging I found a solution:

In a service provider do the following:

use Carbon\Carbon;

//...

public function boot()
    {
        $trans = Carbon::getTranslator();
        $trans->addResource('array', require base_path('resources/lang/hu/carbon.php'), 'hu');
        $trans->setLocale('hu');
    }

And then you can create a normal lang file that returns an array. Just copy one of these files and do the needed modifications: https://github.com/briannesbitt/Carbon/tree/master/src/Carbon/Lang

I hope this helps

balping left a reply on Mass Insert • 1 year ago

Thanks for your answer! Do you anything about the second method? Is it possible using laravel's built-in functionality?

balping started a new conversation Mass Insert • 1 year ago

It may have been asked here before but I didn't find anything.

I need to insert many rows to an SQL table.

I found in the docs that I can do this:

DB::table('users')->insert([
    ['email' => 'taylor@example.com', 'votes' => 0],
    ['email' => 'dayle@example.com', 'votes' => 0]
]);

But I'm interested if the statement is prepared only once or many times in this case. It does matter.

My second question is that is it possible preparing a query once and then inserting data from a loop? I'd like to avid unnecessary memory consumption but in the above example I need to create a huge array

balping left a reply on DateFormat On Form Binding • 1 year ago

On Stack Overflow they found a much better solution as mine, here it is: http://stackoverflow.com/a/31737184/898783

    {!! Form::label('first_date', 'First Date') !!}
    {!! Form::text('first_date') !!}
{!! Form::close() !!}```

balping left a reply on DateFormat On Form Binding • 1 year ago

Hi!

The difference was that Form:model() calls getAttributeValue() while otherwise toArray() is called.

Anyway, I solved the problem overriding Carbon's default date format:

Carbon\Carbon::setToStringFormat('Y.m.d');

30th July, 2015

balping left a reply on DateFormat On Form Binding • 1 year ago

Because Laravel should do it for me automatically. I don't see any difference between accessing a model instance in a view while creating an index and accessing the same instance with the Form::model() method. But sadly there is a difference - I just don't understand why.

Secondly I don't feel comfortable declaring the same thing twice. If I create an accessor function fore each date field, I'm definitely repeating code. Because there's the $dates array where sufficient information is defined.

balping started a new conversation DateFormat On Form Binding • 1 year ago

Hi!

I'm using Laravel 5.1

I got a model:

class ExampleModel extends Model {

    // ....
    protected $dateFormat = 'Y.m.d';
    protected $dates = ['first_date', 'second_date'];

    // ...
}

So when I'm indexing ExampleModel elements, the date format is correct (ex 2015.07.31)

But on an edit form it uses the default format: 2015-07-31 00:00:00

I'm using Form::model() binding.

I know I could use getFirstDateAttribute() but it's not the solution I'm looking for. Because it's not elegant at all and once I defined the $dates array, it should work automatically in every case.

So is it a bug maybe? Or am I doing something wrong?
